I'm not sure I have a simple answer to that question.

This is not a Japanese proverb in the slightest- it originated on the internet in the early 2000's, and nobody's certain who penned it. It rings true for most people who live distinctly public and private lives. The third and final life they live, if present, remains entirely within and is never shared.
