Add a Full Width option and a Fixed Size option.
This removes the current behavior of adapting to tab name, i.e folder name.
|
|
This MR adds options to keep tab bar always visible and to remove the close button from tabs.
MR !269 cannot be reopened because the branch it is based on is no longer accessible. Per @meven direction, I am opening this new MR.
Note: Defaults to current defaults.
{width=734 height=597}
{width=762 height=580}
Criticisms of previous MR:
* Options should take effect immediately when users apply new settings, rather than requiring restart.
* Done.
* Concern about potential maintenance burden.
* I've been maintaining some version of this patch for ~4-5 years, available via [aur/dolphin-tabopts](https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/dolphin-tabopts) and Chaotic AUR. During that time, only two major rebases were needed. First was what appeared to be automated linting and reformatting. Second was when the preferences system was reorganized.
Had the patch been integrated in the code base prior to those refactors, the first would have required zero maintainer intervention (assuming automated reformatting). The second would have required minimal effort beyond what was needed for the refactor itself.
Every defect I've noticed during that time were also present in the unpatched package.
* There is no demand or desire for this feature.
* Equivalent settings are available in various apps across operating systems and desktop environments, including several KDE apps, such as akregator, kate, konsole (confirmed in 25.12.1).
* The first merge request in this repo !1 was to implement always showing the tab bar.
* Some users have found, created an account, and commented at the previous MR to ask that it be reconsidered.
* Arch opt-in pkgstats shows non-zero count for aur/dolphin-tabopts since early 2023. Max 15 in early 2025. Current 5.
* Chaotic AUR download metrics is 41 (rolling 30-day count).
* Unproductive "discussion" not worth further comment.

There is one bool setting in Dolphin Interface->Folders&Tabs->Split_view
which determines which panel is closed on "Close split view" button
click (currently focused or unfocused one).
This commit replaces this setting with (enum-based) 3-state combo box.
Since now we can set "When closing a split view" action to:
- Close the active pane
- Close the inactive pane
- Close the right pane

While the file's content won't change, applications may no longer
recognize it.

Added a 'dynamic view' option, which allows to switch from a 'compact' or 'details' view to an 'icons' view if most of the files in the directory are images or videos. It reverts to the previous view mode when we switch to a directory which doesn't meet that criteria.
The view mode is only changed once so users don't have to undo that for specific folders when they don't want icon view.
A setting is added in the "Display style" section of the general view setting page.

- Statusbar has three modes: Small, FullWidth and Disabled
- FullWidth is the original statusbar
- Small is the new default statusbar
- This statusbar overlays on top of the items instead of taking space
- It changes size according to content
- Disabled turns statusbar completely off
- Zoom slider and space information is only shown in full-width statusbar
- Space information is now always on
- If user navigates with keyboard, or scrolls to selection, the scrolling will take the statusbar into account
- This makes sure the statusbar does not cover any items

This improves consistency among wording. More clarity is achieved
by avoiding technical terms or terms with multiple meanings.
Notable changes:
-Specify full settings path: "Configure Dolphin > View > General"
in Show Hidden Files whatsThis
-Mention setting to hide files with application/x-trash MIME type
in "Show Hidden Files" whatsThis
-Mention Split View mode in "Copy/Move to Other View" whatsThis
-Reword "Activate Tab" actions to "Go to Tab" (Next, Previous,
Last, numbers)
-Add "Last Tab" iconText, consistent with "Next Tab" & "Previous
Tab"
-Update Split View whatsthis to explain how to tell which view is
"in focus" visually
-Replace "pane" with "view" in split view settings text, and
clarify tooltip text
-Reword "objects" to "items" in whatsThis texts
-Reword "find bar" to "search bar" in Search button whatsThis text

The selection mode action is a checkable toggle action named
"Select Files and Folders" which has "Space" as the default
shortcut.
In selection mode a bottom bar with contextual actions is shown.
These should mostly mirror the actions which are available through
the right-click context menu aka DolphinContextMenu.
Resizing of the window might make a overflow button appear in the
bottom selection mode bar.
This commit makes press and hold in the view activate selection
mode. This behaviour is not triggered if the press and hold is
used to either start a rubberband selection or a drag operation
within a short time. The length of the short timeframe is defined
by a QStyleHint. This is currently not implemented in touch
because I can't test it.
Mix the selection mode bars' background colors using a nice
combination of colors from the current color scheme

Makes this setting more accessible and makes it consistent with other
KDE applications. Since Dolphin has a separate status bar on each view
container and doesn't use kxmlgui's statusbar, we don't get this menu
entry automatically.

Summary:
All modern web browsers offer a function to show tabs from last time when a browser starts, and many apps today
restore their prior state when they're launched. This patch implements thatfunctionality as an option and turns it on by default.
The settings window is accordingly adjusted to be clear about what applies when:

FIXED-IN: 20.08.0
Depends on D25106
Depends on D25219
Test Plan:
With the new setting turned off:
- No behavioral changes at all
With the new setting turned on:
- When launched from the GUI or CLI without any URLs, dolphin restores session
- When rebooting with Dolphin open, it restores session normally after the system comes back (i.e. no behavioral change here)
- When launched with URLs, Dolphin window is opened showing those URLs instead of restoring session
- When Dolphin is already running and a new window is opened, that new window shows a single tab with the same URL as was visible in the previously-open Dolphin instance (i.e. no behavioral change here)
- "Open Containing folder" functionality in other apps works regardless of whether or not Dolphin is running

Summary:
This makes Dolphin use the "Dropdown List & Automatic" completion mode by default when editing the URL bar.
Given the context of someone typing file paths, I can't see why one wouldn't want to use this feature, unless they don't like how it looks.

Summary:
Adds an option to open externally called folder in a new tab.
By default this option is enabled
Test Plan:
If option selected:
1. All valid arguments passed to Dolphin should be opened in tabs of an instance(s) (if it exists). Duplicate tabs just change activation to current tab.
If option not selected:
1. All calls to Dolphin result in a new instance being opened
This option does not require Dolphin to be restarted to take effect.

Summary:
Automatic creation of .directory files is one of the most
complained about things in dolphin.
These days applications are supposed to store application-specific data
within $XDG_DATA_HOME. Long-term that's the proper solution for this
issue, but for now we can at least flip the default so that we no longer
create .directory files out of the box.
A tooltip is also added as a kind of warning for the users who want to
change the setting. Ideally a proper warning should be shown using a
KMessageWidget or KMessageBox, but neither play too well with the
setting dialog workflow used by dolphin.

Summary:
I found these strings very hard to understand then translate without looking into the code because the use of "view" refers to both "the split view" and "the left pane and the right pane of the split view".
This patch attempts to explicitly mention panes when needed.

User feedback has shown that many users used the dialog for renaming
files. Since the dialog is still used when renaming multiple files, I
think there is no good reason not to use it for renaming single files
as well if the user wants.
Note that we cannot add an option in the settings dialog due to string
freeze issues. For the time being, you will have to add the line
"RenameInline=false" to the [General] section of
$KDEHOME/share/config/dolphinrc.

The new view-engine currently does not support inline-renaming
and because of more important pending issues this cannot be
implemented for the 4.8 release of KDE applications.
The plan for 4.9 is to implement inline-renaming again and
to make it "so good" (tm) that it is always turned on (-> there is
no need anymore for an option to disable it ;-)
